Myths about Breast Cancer
There are misconceptions going around about breast cancer. It is important to know the truth.
Some myths about breast cancer include:
1. Breast Cancer is more common in women with larger breasts
There is no correlation or connection between breast size and the risk of cancer. However, it can sometimes be more difficult to examine larger breasts.
2. A breast injury can cause breast cancer
Breast injuries do not cause breast cancer. Although, injuries may draw attention to an abnormality which can lead to a diagnosis.
3. Breast pain is a definite and sure sign of breast cancer
Pain in the breast is not usually a sign of cancer, but at the same time shouldn’t be ruled out completely and should be checked by a health professional.
4. Breast cancer only affects older women
While most cases of breast cancer do occur in older women, a diagnosis can happen at any age.
5. Carrying a phone in your bra can cause breast cancer
Carrying a cellphone in your bra does not cause breast cancer.
6. Men do not get breast cancer
Men also have breast tissues and although very rare, breast cancer occurs in men too.
7. Breast cancer is contagious
You cannot “catch” breast cancer and neither can you give it to someone else. It is not contagious.
8. Anti-perspirants and deodorants cause breast cancer
There is no strong evidence supporting this claim.
9. If I have a family history of breast cancer, I will get it
The truth is most people diagnosed with breast cancer have no known history. Many people see breast cancer as an inherited disease but only 5-10% of breast cancers are believed to be hereditary. A wide majority of people who get breast cancer have no family history; this indicates that there are other factors involved such as environment and lifestyle.
10. Breast implants can cause breast cancer
Breast implants cannot directly cause breast cancer and women with breast implants are not at a higher risk of having breast cancer.
