Oyenike Oyekan Foundation Continues Breast Cancer Sensitization at Obasa Primary Healthcare Centre, Bodija, Ibadan
The Oyenike Oyekan Foundation continued its commitment to promoting breast cancer awareness and early detection with a breast cancer sensitization programme held at Obasa Primary Healthcare Centre, Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
The programme brought together women from the community for an engaging educational session focused on improving their understanding of breast cancer, promoting early detection, and encouraging proactive health-seeking behaviors.
The sensitization session commenced with an introduction by Mr. Nelson Ekujimi, Consultant, who emphasized the importance of early detection in improving breast cancer outcomes. He encouraged participants to take breast health seriously and stressed that cancer should not be approached primarily as a spiritual problem, but as a medical condition that requires appropriate medical attention, timely diagnosis, and professional care.
Following the introduction, Fasiku Precious, Programme Coordinator, led the main sensitization session. She provided participants with practical and easy-to-understand information on what breast cancer is, its risk factors, ways to reduce associated risks, common myths and misconceptions surrounding cancer, and the importance of breast self-awareness.
A key part of the session focused on breast self-examination, where participants were guided on how to examine their breasts and recognise changes that may require further medical evaluation. The session also highlighted the importance of knowing what is normal for one's breasts and seeking medical attention promptly when unusual changes are noticed.
The programme provided an opportunity for participants to ask questions, clarify misconceptions, and gain practical knowledge that can support informed decisions about their breast health.
